How to Wear an Oversized Denim Jacket

I bought an oversized denim jacket last spring and wore it endlessly all through the summer and into early fall. I found the oversized fit was great to layer it under sweaters for colder days, but it also looks great with just a tee or tank underneath and of course over maxi dresses.

We all had a slightly cropped or fitted denim jacket before. But, I find an oversized denim jacket to be much more versatile. A slightly bigger fit can be dressed casually and it also still works as an added layer to throw over a summer dress.

This season I like making an outfit “sandwich.” Meaning I pair casual pieces (the bread), with something a bit formal, (the meat). Like the above denim styled look. The jacket and converse sneakers are casual. While my slacks add a little more structure and formality to an otherwise casual outfit.

In the outfit above, the sandwich method makes the jacket and shoes more formal items. While I pair heels, white jeans and denim jacket together for date night.

In short, you can easily style a denim jacket for casual day outings and also evening.

A Trendy Way to Style a Denim Jacket

A trendy way to style a denim jacket is to pull up the sleeves, instead of cuffing them. This is a more modern way to wear an oversized jackets or coats.

To get the look; Button your sleeves and then push them up, scrunching to your elbow about 3/4 of the way.

What Can I wear with an Oversized Denim Jacket?

The slightly oversized look allows for more versatility. I love it paired over casual dresses with sneakers for an easy errands look like the inspo photo above, and I think it looks great over sweats.

Below I have the denim jacket paired with sweats and sambas, perfect for weekends and activitites with the kids for Spring.

For summer months, you can wear your denim jacket with a t shirt and a pair of bicycle shorts. It adds a little more warmth and visual interest to an otherwise basic outfit.

For a more polished look, a crisp white tee and a pair of structured shorts and ballet flats help create an easy work outfit. You can easily swap the shorts for slacks or a satin skirt for example, to make it more work appropriate.
