A Hot Summer Day Always Calls for a Good Sangria

Typically, red wine sangria is the most commonly made sangria, but in the warmer months I love the refreshing and crisp white sangria.

The best part is that you can make a sangria ahead of time and let the citrus and the fruit soak in the liquid which will give your cocktail even more flavor.

How to Make this Summer Classic Cocktail

Slice and dice all the fruit you want to use in your sangria. You can use any fruit or berries you like, but I recommend using apples or citrus especially if you’re planning to make this batch and keep it overnight.

Add brandy to the pitcher, then fruit and pour your choice of wine. Mix everything gently.

Let your sangria sit for at least 20 minutes in the refrigerator.

To serve your sangria, fill glass with lots of ice. Then add fruit or berries from the pitcher and pour in the wine leaving room to top off your glass with processo or club soda.

Here I used a favorite club soda. You could also add a hard seltzer like Truly if you want it a little boozy. The point is sangria should have a little fizz to it.

I added some edible flowers for a Spring vibe.

Additional Notes & Tips for this Wine Recipe

Which wine is best for sangria?

There is no rule about which wine you should use to make sangria.

However, I prefer to use lighter, fruit forward wines such as pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc, rather than a chardonnay.

Alternatively, if you love sparkling wine you can make this white sangria a sparkling wine.

Also, a great wine that is best for sangria, is any leftover wine you may have. Have a couple of wine bottles open? Great. Use them up to make this sangria recipe.

But in all seriousness, use an inexpensive wine, any bottle under $15 would be great.

What can I use if I don’t have brandy?

You can skip brandy if you don’t have it on hand for this recipe. You could also substitute with Grand Marnier or Bourbon.

Keep in mind that if you opt for using bourbon you may need to add a little more sweetness to the drink. Brandy is naturally sweeter than most bourbons. A good way to add sweetness would be to use simple syrup.

What is the best fruit to put in sangria?

There is no rule about which fruit or berries are best with sangria. You can use virtually any fruit or herbs at your disposal.

This time around I kept it simple with oranges and apples. But you could also add strawberries or blackberries as well as mint or basil or even a little thyme.

If you like thyme, check out this recipe for an  vodka lemonade.

Can you Make a non-alcoholic sangria?

If you’d like to make a non-alcoholic white sangria you can skip the brandy and instead use non-alcoholic wine to make this drink into a delicious and fun mocktail.
