Coffee, Cake and Keeping Traditions Alive

One of my favorite memories growing up was going for dinner at my great aunt’s house (my grandmother’s sister). My grandmother was one of six, and every week the siblings and their family would get together for dinner. Except the focus of this get together was never dinner as much as it was all about eating as soon as possible to clear out the table for coffee, dessert and their very own card game.

Yep. I’ve never seen a table, typically set for 20 or so people, cleaned up as quickly as when it was time for coffee and dessert! Tablecloths would fly up in the air as everyone quickly picked up their dishes and carried them to the kitchen.

We all knew what happens next: delicious dessert, coffee and cards.

Keeping family traditions alive with Nescafe, dessert and cards

I must’ve been six or seven the last time this huge get together happened, but it’s a tradition that has stuck with my immediate family. In our home, a meal is not complete until NESCAFÉ® CLÁSICO™ and dessert is served.

My mom loves instant coffee, so I always pick up a of  NESCAFÉ® CLÁSICO™ Instant Coffee from Walmart. It is something that can always bring us together with the flavors of home. If we are at my mom’s house, she typically makes all dessert from scratch but I’m not a baker. Good thing Walmart has plenty of sweet options on hand that taste homemade.

Regardless of whose house we are at, dessert and coffee are always followed by cards. My parents taught my sister and I the family game which is a cross between Pinochle and Poker. So if you’re coming over, we’ll teach you to play too.

A game will cost you about a quarter though. When we were little, my parents and grandmothers would give my sister the money we lost back.

But not anymore.

No matter who lost though, a cup of NESCAFÉ® CLÁSICO™ and a yummy dessert keeps everyone in a good mood. It’s such a little family tradition, but I love it.

I hope Fernando grows up seeing us clear out the table, knowing it’s coffee and cake time, and I can’t wait to teach him our family card game. I might even give him his piggy bank money back!

What are some of your favorite traditions you hope to continue through the generations?
