5 Things I Learned After Getting a Facial

This post has been sponsored by Healthy Essentials. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Last month, I finally had my first experience in receiving a facial. Even though I got pretty serious about my skin care over the last few years, I’ve never actually gone to see a professional. I did put hours into research, however, and came up with a pretty good routine. Or so I thought. I was very lucky because my aesthetician was not only incredibly talented (she came highly recommended by a friend) but also unbelievably knowledgeable. And she dropped some really good insight that I thought I’d share with you because her little pearls of wisdom have really changed the way I approach my skincare.

Do not wash your face in the shower

One of my favorite habits was taking a super hot shower, especially after my yoga class. The studio has babysitting and the quick rinse after class is truly a highlight. I pack all of my essentials in my gym bag, like Neutrogena Make Up Remover Wipes and other goodies so that I can indulge before and during the hot shower.

Turns out, hot showers are not the best for your skin—especially the delicate chest and face areas. My aesthetician said to literally turn my back to the water to protect my neck, chest, and face and wash my face with lukewarm water instead and not in the shower.

Now, I make sure to use the Neutrogena Make Up Remover Wipes while not in the shower and then follow up with Aveeno Positively Radiant Sheer lotion; it has SPF and is super lightweight.

It’s also a Johnson & Johnson product, like Neutrogena, and right now there is an amazing deal going on!

Exfoliate only once or twice a week

Because I have quite a few broken capillaries around my nose and cheeks, my skin looks red. Turns out, my daily exfoliating was making it worse. At night, I would wear soothing creams and then scrub all of that effort away in the morning.

In short, exfoliating is beneficial but not on the daily and not for sensitive skin.

If you have red or sensitive skin, my aesthetician recommended doing charcoal masks instead of exfoliating. Spa party after yoga anyone?

Use gels instead of creams

Speaking of layering creams. My aesthetician recommended I switch to a gel instead. I love the Neutrogena HydroBoost gel-cream. It’s perfect for morning because it’s refreshing and helps diminish AM puffiness. The light, silky texture of the Neutrogena HydroBoost Water Gel also works well under makeup. Rich eye creams, on the other hand, can cause concealer to crease into lines. So, the more you know.

Hyaluronic Acid Is Your BFF

My facial took about an hour. A heavenly, glorious hour. Except maybe the extraction part… But in that hour, my aesthetician mentioned Hyaluronic Acid about 20 times. Find all the products that contain this gem and use them a lot.

BTW, the HydroBoost Water Gel from Neutrogena has Hyaluronic acid in a bid to maintain moisture levels. Thanks to aging and environmental aggressors, our natural levels of Hyaluronic Acid diminish.

This is the perfect little jar to carry with you for soft, supple, and moisturized skin after a yoga class or just in the morning. Neutrogena also has a gel HydroBoost Eye Gel-Cream—so if you have dryness under the eyes, this could be a game changer for you.

Plus, if you buy $30 worth of Johnson & Johnson product, you get a $10 reward so basically, free eye hydration. You are welcome.

Facials Should Be a Part of Your Skin Care

If you have the opportunity to see an aesthetician, I highly recommend doing so. My skin felt rejuvenated and extra moisturized for days. The recommendation is to visit every six weeks or so, but for me that’s not realistic. But, even if I get to her office once or twice a year, I think my skin will definitely thank me!

But, if you don’t get to indulge soon, I hope these 4 things I learned after my first facial will be helpful and workable into your own skin care routine.
